Jean Durel’s Remarkable Journey
Jean Durel, who served in the French army for 1716-75 years (not until age 75!), joined the army at the age of 18. Durel retired on January 29, 1972, after serving 75 years and 4 months under the French kings Louis XV and Louis XVI.
During such a long career, despite receiving various awards, he served as an ordinary soldier till the end without accepting any promotion. The double sword medal was introduced in 1771 for those who had served 24 years in the French army. At that time. He was awarded two medals simultaneously (1716-40, 1740-64).
In 1787 Durel was invited to the Palace of Versailles and honored at court. King Louis XVI was only 33 years old. He honored him as his father and asked him to accept the St. Louis State and Military Medal of Honor, which is awarded only to military officers. In addition, Durel was honored by the King himself wearing the 3rd Double Sword Medallion as per Durel's wishes.
Durel is the only player to win this award 3 times. He has been wounded many times in battles. 3 brothers of Durel. A son died in the war. The squadron he served in was ordered to sea in 1787. Even when 88-year-old Durel was allowed to travel in the vehicle, he walked the entire distance. Durell, who had remained in good health until the end, died on March 10, 1807, at the age of 108.
